Welcome to Poster to Poster

The ‘must’ have for railway enthusiasts

This series showcases some of the greatest collections of railway posters to be found anywhere in the world. Of the several thousand railway posters published since the Victorian era, fewer than 10% have featured in poster books. Now, in a unique arrangement with the National Railway Museum, which has opened its archives, and using images from specialist poster auctioneer Onslows, this series aims to re-dress that imbalance. While many ‘classic’ images will be used, posters from British Rail and the current railway operators, such as Virgin, are also promised.

Richard Furness - Author

The complete collection so far includes eight volumes, with more than 260 posters per volume. Each of the first seven volumes has a regional focus and the locations are based on the older British county names rather than the modern administrative areas. The eighth volume travels further afield to worldwide destinations.

These colourful books showcase the posters as if readers are taking railway journeys. Not only are the posters beautifully presented, these books cover in more depth than before the history, geography and commercial aspects of each place visited allowing the book to be a wonderful educational travelogue, as well as an extensive poster guide. The central core of each book is the posters, carriage prints and original paintings. You’ll find many unpublished materials and posters too.

At the beginning of each chapter an attractive hand-drawn map indicates the locations depicted in posters. Scotland is a good place to start. It has a rich history, wonderful geography andunique culture. More than 330 Scottish posters, many previously unpublished in books, are included, and a comprehensive text not only gives details about the poster, but also the region or service to which it refers, with an emphasis on the history behind the poster. The text is detailed, very readable and enjoyable. Indeed you can journey around Scotland without leaving your seat, through the medium of the posters and text.
